We have naturally nothing to do with the disappearing of that part and we are actually a bit offended by their claim. However, we have to admit that we are very interested in the F1 series for two reasons. First reason is the fact that Finns have been doing pretty good in the games when compared to the population living in Finland. Names like Räikkönen, Bottas, Häkkinen, Salo and Rosberg are familiar to past and present F1 fans. The second reason is related to our on-going mission to manufacture a superb graphite fly fishing rod, with un-parallel casting capabilities. We knew that if we want to achieve that, we had to learn from the best of the carbon game and you can't find better than those working with F1 cars.
First we started with action samples from the best materials available. We found an action that we liked quite fast but it wasn't enough. We knew we could make it better. We started experimenting with different combinations of materials, components and manufacturing methods. All carbon rods utilise carbon fibres that are bonded together by an adhesive resin. A resin material incorporating silica nano spheres provides several benefits.
We spent a lot of time and money to get our hands on the latest silica nano resin, which we then combined with different carbon fibre mixes. The final secret sauce that makes our new XO rods more durable and responsive than any other rod we've made so far was named as SISU. It strenghtens the rod significantly by making it more resistant for compression. You'll notice the advantages of SISU in the responsiveness and weight to strength ratio of the rod as well as in durability.
We also tried a lot of different combinations of components from the rod guides to the reel seat. We tried sanded, un-sanded, painted and unpainted blanks. There was a hell of a lot of proto types going through our hands and our hands were rough from casting them. We found the perfect combination. In the end we were left off with a rod with natural un-sanded and unpainted blank enforced by our new sauce of nano silica resin.
We started the XO project in 2013. The goal was to make a rod that exceeds all the rods we've made so far in every aspect. In this time we have tried and tested a lot of different combinations of materials and actions. Good enough was not going to cut it – it had to be as close to perfect as possible. We also wanted to add something that tells about our origins in Finland.
